This training will provide knowledge to increase awareness of considerations related to unique beliefs and dynamics of a diverse population, in efforts of improving service delivery. There will be exploration of:

• Dispelling stereotypes and creating inclusivity for LBBTQIA+
• Improving communication of differences in gender preferences, sexuality, and identity
• Improving provider-client interactions and outcomes for couples and individual therapy

The APA’s  2022 Stress in America survey revealed that 76% of Americans believe that the future of our nation is a significant source of stress, and 66% respond they are stressed by the current political climate. Political anxiety is distinctly different from psychological conditions such as general anxiety, with its unique impact on emotional well-being and societal cohesion (as well as direct and indirect impact on functioning and relationships in the workplace).

Storytelling is ancient and has powerful effects on human motivation. We feel less distressed both by telling stories and reading them. We feel less alone when we can empathize with the journeys taken and told by fellow travelers. The practice of Narrative Medicine involves reading and reflecting on stories in a shared environment. Narrative Medicine was originally developed as a training tool for medical students and residents, to strengthen their connection to the human aspect of medicine / health care, but it has been increasingly recognized as a powerful set of practices in many disciplines and environments. We will explore the theory and practice of Narrative Medicine as a pathway to nurture our own empathy and sense of meaning in response to ongoing socio-political stressors
