NC LAP Seeks Counselor/Clinical Coordinator

for Piedmont/Central Region


The NC Lawyer Assistance Program (NC LAP) provides confidential assistance to lawyers, judges, and law students who are dealing with substance abuse and various mental health issues. We are currently seeking a counselor/clinical coordinator based in the Raleigh area (no exceptions), who will support the territory in the Piedmont region and counties south and slightly southwest of Raleigh. The position requires day-time travel throughout the Piedmont/Central region, with occasional overnight travel.


Ideal candidates will:

  • Have significant clinical experience in both substance abuse and  (i.e. LCAS & LPC      mental health evaluation and treatment, with licensure in both fields
  • Have direct experience with and/or good working knowledge of 12  Step Programs
  • Be comfortable working in a collaborative team environment
  • Have the ability and comfort level to work outside the confines of a traditional counseling role
  • Possess and demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish client rapport quickly
  • Be well organized and able to continually “shift gears” and discernthe crucial priority amid numerous competing priorities
  • Have experience with and be comfortable working with a highly intellectual and professional client base
  • Have successful experience with and enjoy facilitating suppor groups
  • Develop and maintain a strong network of providers and referral resources both locally and nationally
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with NC LAP volunteers
  • Have the ability to craft or assist with writing articles and providing educational presentations
  • Be comfortable working with the discipline counsel of the State Bar,   judges, the Board of Law Examiners, legal counsel, and law firms

Summary: This position is 8 hours per week.

Essential Job Functions:

• Provides psychotherapy or counseling to individuals, groups, couples, or families.
• Interviews clients to gather and interpret social, personal, environmental, and health information.
• Evaluate and treat problems within their scope of practice
• Coordinates and plans programs and activities to meet client’s social and emotional needs.
• Facilitate cognitive, affective, and behavioral changes consistent with treatment goals
• Establish and maintain a relationship of mutual respect, acceptance, and trust
• Evaluate the effectiveness of treatment services provided to the client
• Identify appropriate resources and assessment instruments, as needed
• Document findings in client records according to established protocol.
• Keep case load as required and ensures case documentation is up-to-date and reflective of services
• May be required to perform other duties as assigned

• Master’s degree in social work required.
• State license to practice clinical social work required. Experience:
• 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area.
• Counseling experience required

Knowledge and Skills:

• Knowledge of Confidentiality and HIPPA laws.
• Strong written and oral communication skills required to effectively communicate with a broad range of individuals.
• Ability to prioritize all aspects of the job is a key to success.
• Ability to provide group, individual, and family counseling sessions.
• Strong problem solving skills required
• Must display professionalism and leadership qualities.
• Knowledge and respect of all confidentiality issues.
• Familiar with a variety of the field’s concepts, practices, and procedures.
