Title:    The Experience of Muslims in the Workplace and How EAP can Support Muslim Employees
Bio:    Imam Shane Atkinson spent twenty years caring for patients as a Board Certified Orthotic and Prosthetic Practitioner. In 2011 he was awarded an Ijaza (Masters level traditional degree) to teach Islamic theology, law, and spirituality. Shane entered the Clinical Pastoral Education program at UNC Medical Center in 2015 as the first Muslim in their department. Shane completed a rigorous four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE), and now teaches in UNC’s CPE program as well as serving on their Professional Advisory Group. Shane currently works at Elon Universities Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life as their Muslim Life Coordinator. Since 2015, Shane has served as Associate Imam at As Salaam Islamic Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Session Description:    As the number of Muslims increase in the workplace, now more than ever, EA Professionals need a firm understanding of Islamic beliefs, practices, and concerns. Cultural and Religious differences that may present a barrier to communication can be effectively bridged with the appropriate knowledge and empathic approach. Our sessions will address the most common issues Muslims struggle within the workplace such as accommodations for prayer, allowances for head coverings, and navigating dietary restrictions. We will explore best practices when offering emotional support as the Muslim community shy away from seeking counsel and advice from people outside of their immediate family.

Title:      Considering a Different 1%: Military Families in the United States
Bio:    Rachel Kaufmann, MA, LPC, CEAP is Director, Specialty Programs for the ValueOptions Federal Services Inc., a division of Beacon Health Options. In that role she is responsible for the overall management and operations of an outreach team and a Wounded Warrior Resources team which are part of Military OneSource, an employee assistance program for active duty, National Guard and Reserve servicemembers and their immediate family members. Prior to that, she worked as an EAP Workplace Consultant providing EAP consultation to over 100 client companies. Rachel has worked in the field of Employee Assistance since 2005 and received a bachelor’s degree in Biology and Psychology from Scripps College, holds a Master of Counseling degree from Webster University, and received Certification as an Employee Assistance Program professional in 2009.
Description:     North Carolina trails only California and Texas in the sheer number of military members who call the Tar Heel state home. In 2016, this number was 129,049, out of 9.5 million residents, or about 1.35%. It’s important for EA professionals in North Carolina to understand the characteristics of military families: demographic information, challenges unique to the military and challenges in common with civilian communities. We will explore our own biases about military families and share tips and insights on treating these families. We’ll end our session with an exploration of resources for learning more about military families, as well as counseling and other resources which can assist you in your work with them.
